The most addiction is Salary not drug

Salary addition is the most addiction that people don’t talk about because they never see salary as an addiction.

According to Nassim Nicholas Taleb, famous author of “The Black Swan”  said that:

“The three most harmful addictions are heroin, carbohydrates, and a monthly salary.”

In Nigeria, we might argue about it but when you look closely to the statement, you will certainly agree with this.

When we talk about heroine, it represent the local cocaine and hard drugs over here.

Talking about carbohydrate addiction, you will agree with me that it is what we normally eat in this part of the world.

Coming to the main bone of contention Salary addiction, many will argue about it. lets try to solve the mystery.

According to Merriam-Webster, Addiction is:

: the state of being addicted

a strong inclination to do, use, or indulge in something repeatedly

From the definition above, we have to ask our self question:

Is salary addictive?

To answer this question, lets look at the similarity of salary and drugs

Similarity between salary and drug addiction.

when you do drugs, you get “high”. This state of “highness” essentially boils down to a wave of dopamine in your brain. Dopamine is kind of the “reward hormone” that our brain secretes to make us feel good about something.

Do you know that getting money has also been found to trigger this kind of response from our brain?

Every time you get bank alert, you get a small spike of dopamine.

Every drug addicts will also want to be getting this kind of feeling and that is how the salary is structured too.

Just seeing that amount come to your bank account every month is a thrill, and to know you can keep making that amount, if you work more or less consistently, is another high.

If an addict loss an access to his regular source of drug, he gets into a limbo where he can barely function and might turn violence.

Similarly, When a salary earner losses his job, he will also get into a situation where he will want to kill himself and turn violence.

When an addict reaches the final stages of his addiction, all of his life revolves around that. His addiction becomes top priority and ultimately controls all of his life.

This is exactly what happens with lots of people and their jobs. They reach a point where their job dictates how the rest of their lives will be spent.

Having a job determines almost all of your daily habits, and thus all of your life. Think about it. You get to wake up the same time each weekday, execute the same routine, and then come back home at the same time, just to repeat the process the next day.

Salary addiction destroys your chance of building wealth.

This sounds awkward right?

Its is a fact that drug addiction can render one useless and ineffective to build wealth, The same way salary addiction renders one useless and ineffective to build wealth because your income is capped.

In order to build wealth however, a capped income will not cut it. What you need is explosive income, something that will enable you to make millions in a few years, not several decades.

The only way to accomplish something like that is by the means of starting and growing your own business.

I did not say that earning salary is wrong or bad.

But not having another means of income apart from your salary is an addiction.

Salary addiction is really eating into our society because we never taught of it as an addiction.

Salary addiction is the most addiction in this part of the world because we never taught of it as an addiction.

In our world, we only want to get hired but don’t think of hiring people.

We forgot about entrepreneurship as a source of income and development but we want to be paid monthly

We are soaked in salary addiction and never want to get out of it.

Lets wake up and reject salary addiction because its the key reason we are not developing our personal skill, intellectuals, mental skills etc.

Let us try and use our mental strength and our knowledge/experience, not physical effort, to make money.

Use our mind, not our hands, to make money.

Think, instead of work, to make money.

Think about it and don’t forget to use the comment box below to tell us what you think.
