Do animals have soul? All you need to know

I was at Foresight schools Ikom Cross River State, Nigeria for a seminar where people were arguing if animals have soul or not…

Does animals have souls?

If they don’t, what do we call the feelings they exhibit?

If yes, is there soul the same as the humans (immortal)?

What does the bible talk about the souls of animals?

Will our pet go to heaven with us?

All these questions will be answered in the article.

What is a Soul?

Soul according to dictionary.com is the principle of life, feeling, thought, and action in humans, regarded as a distinct entity separate from the body, and commonly held to be separable in existence from the body; the spiritual part of humans as distinct from the physical part.

Soul as the spiritual part of humans regarded in its moral aspect, or as believed to survive death and be subject to happiness or misery in a life to come.

Recently, studies have shown that many non-human beings feel. Elephants appear to feel grief, while dolphins and whales express joy, or something much like it.

Parrots can become cranky, pigs and cows terrified, chickens saddened, monkeys seemingly embarrassed.

Experiments have shown that rats are agitated when seeing surgery performed on other rats. There’s also evidence that rats take pleasure in being tickled.

According to an online catholic answers; Animals have souls–and so do plants. But Animal and vegetable souls are dependent entirely on matter for their operation and being. They cease to exist at death.

They also argued that Human souls, by contrast, aren’t material. They’re spiritual. Only a spirit can know and love, a spirit’s two chief faculties being the intellect (which knows) and the will (which loves). We know human souls are spiritual since humans can know and love.

What the bible said about animal soul

Theologians have point out that man was created superior to animals and that animals can’t be equal with man citing Genesis 1:26.

Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

(Genesis 1:26, NIV).

Most interpreters of the Bible assume that man’s likeness to God and animals’ subservience to man implies that animals have the “breath of life,” nephesh chay in Hebrew (Genesis 1:30), but not an immortal soul in the same sense as a human’s.

In the days of Adam and eve, the bible suggests that they are vegetarian Genesis (2:16-17, NIV)

“You are free to eat from any tree in the garden, but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it, you will surely die.”

(Genesis 2:16-17, NIV)

But after the flood, God gave Noah and his sons permission to kill and eat animals (Genesis 9:3, NIV).

God prohibited the killing of a man (Exodus 20:13), but did not prohibit the killing of animals.

Man is made in God’s image, so man must not kill one of his own kind.

If Animals have a “soul” that survives death, it is different from man’s. It does not need redemption. Christ died to save the souls of human beings, not animals.

What the bible said about Animals in Heaven

In Isaiah 65: 25, Prophet Isaiah says God will include animals in the new heavens and a new earth:

“The wolf and the lamb will feed together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox, but dust will be the serpent’s food.”

(Isaiah 65: 25, NIV)

Similarly in Revelation, Apostle John’s vision of heaven also included animals, showing Christ and the armies of heaven “riding on white horses.” (Revelation 19:14, NIV).

Conclusion

From the above reviews, One can comfortable say that animals have souls but different from humans own. Animals souls are mortal while human souls are immortal.

Someone may ask if they will see their pet in heaven, The scripture did not answer such question but the scripture said “With God, all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26, NIV).
